Project Overview

Our team was appointed to dismantle one of the UK’s last remaining steam-powered paper mill machines at the historic John Hargreaves Paper Mill.

The project involved the complete in-situ dismantling and removal of a large and complex piece of industrial heritage machinery within a live industrial environment. Careful planning, specialist equipment, and an experienced workforce were essential to deliver the project safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.

The Task

The scale and construction of the steam-powered machinery presented significant engineering and logistical challenges.

Due to its size and the restrictions of the existing building, the plant could not be removed as a single unit. Every component had to be systematically dismantled in situ before being safely lowered, processed, and removed from the site.

The project required meticulous planning, carefully sequenced dismantling works, controlled lifting operations, and specialist cutting techniques to reduce the machinery into manageable sections while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance.

Our Solution

Using a combination of specialist equipment and proven dismantling techniques, our team successfully completed the project through:

  • Manual dismantling using specialist hand tools
  • Oxy-propane cutting
  • Plasma cutting
  • Thermic lance cutting for heavy-section steel components
  • Engineered lifting operations to safely lower large components
  • Sectioning, processing, and removal of materials from within the building
  • Transportation of dismantled materials to approved recycling and waste facilities

Every stage of the project was carefully planned and managed to ensure safe execution, minimise disruption to the surrounding site, and maximise operational efficiency.

Sustainability & Recycling

Environmental responsibility was a key focus throughout the project.

Following dismantling, all recovered materials were carefully segregated into the appropriate waste streams for recycling. In total, more than 200 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous metals were recovered and recycled, significantly reducing landfill waste while supporting the circular economy.
