Concrete: A Sustainable Choice Beyond Demolition

Concrete is the cornerstone of modern construction. From towering skyscrapers to sturdy foundations, its strength and versatility have made it the go-to material for countless projects. But what happens to concrete when a building reaches the end of its lifespan? Here at Cheshire Demolition, we’re strong believers in sustainable practices, and that’s why concrete recycling is a cornerstone of our operations.

The UK Construction Industry: Building and Rebuilding

The UK construction industry is a material powerhouse. Statistics show that it uses a staggering 295 million tonnes of virgin material per year. However, there’s a positive side to this story: the industry also recycles a significant portion of construction and demolition waste, diverting 46 million tonnes from landfills each year. This recycled material, recycled aggregate or MOT Type 1, plays a vital role in new construction projects.

A Second Life for Concrete: The Power of Recycled Aggregate

Demolition isn’t the end for concrete. The process of concrete recycling involves crushing the concrete, then screening it to separate the different-sized pieces, then remove any remaining debris. The recycled concrete is then typically sold as MOT and 40-80mm Clean Concrete. Concrete can also be used to make 6F2 (a type of road sub-base material), which is a mix of crushed concrete, bricks, and rubble.

Recycled aggregates are used in various construction applications:

  • Sub-Base Materials: Type 1 MOT and 6F2 form a strong and stable foundation for roads, driveways, and patios.
  • Drainage: Crushed concrete can be used for drainage channels and French drains due to its good water permeability.
  • Backfill: Trenches and other excavated areas can be filled with crushed concrete to provide a stable base.

Cheshire Demolition: Committed to Sustainability

At Cheshire Demolition, we take concrete recycling seriously. We process all of the concrete from our demolition projects, transforming it into high-quality recycled products. We offer a wide range of products to suit your specific needs. Whether you require small bags for a domestic project or large tipper loads for a major construction site, we can provide the solution.

By choosing recycled concrete products, you’re actively contributing to a more sustainable construction industry. Recycled aggregate reduces reliance on virgin materials, lowers energy consumption associated with production, and minimises the amount of construction waste going to landfill.
