From The High Peak Quarries to Your Next Project

The quarrying history of Derbyshire and the High Peak is rich and ancient, having shaped the very foundations of the UK’s infrastructure. Today, this tradition continues to provide essential aggregates. Cheshire Demolition is proud to connect this heritage directly to your project, supplying both premium quarry-sourced and environmentally responsible recycled MOT aggregates, perfect for any major building project, garden landscaping or driveway. We offer various grades, sizes, and a commitment to material reuse.

The Ancient History of Derbyshire’s Quarries

The history of quarrying in Derbyshire is long and significant, shaping the county’s landscape and economy, especially in the Peak District. This industry has roots stretching back to pre-Roman times, where stone blocks were used for early monumental buildings and structures.

During the Medieval period and leading into the Industrial Revolution, the quarries became vital. The Peak District was internationally known for millstones made from its resilient Millstone Grit (a grainy sandstone). Meanwhile, the local Carboniferous Limestone in the White Peak and sandstone/gritstone across the county formed the basis of vernacular architecture, defining the look of towns and villages for centuries.

The Industrial Boom of the mid-18th century dramatically increased demand. Wealthy industrialists, such as the Strutts of Belper, opened numerous quarries to supply limestone and gritstone for their mills, housing, and infrastructure. The construction of canals and railways in the 18th and 19th centuries required massive amounts of quarried stone for vital track ballast, viaducts, and bridges.

Even as the industry evolved, moving some limestone extraction underground in the 20th century, and traditional industries like roofing slate declining, Derbyshire has remained a major producer of aggregates for the UK construction industry.

From the High Peak to High-Grade Foundations

Today, Derbyshire remains a major supplier of high-quality crushed rock (limestone and sandstone) for the UK market. The quarried materials support a diverse range of applications, from industrial uses in paint and paper to the provision of essential aggregates.

This is where the ancient resource meets modern construction, in the form of MOT aggregates.

What is MOT?

MOT is an acronym for Ministry of Transport. This term refers to approved granular sub-base materials that meet strict specifications for use in civil engineering and construction. MOT aggregates are made from crushed stone or recycled materials and are essential for creating durable, compacted foundations for roads, driveways, and patios before the final surfacing is laid.

Cheshire Demolition is uniquely positioned to supply a full range of high-grade aggregates for your project, whether you are tackling a major building construction project, groundworks or sourcing garden landscaping products, we can deliver direct to your site.
