Landfill Tax Increases and Simpler Recycling Legislation
From April 2025, the Landfill Tax will increase, alongside the rollout of the Simpler Recycling legislation. Why has this happened? These measures have been implemented to reduce unnecessary waste sent to landfills, encourage businesses and households to adopt better recycling practices and promote environmental sustainability.
What’s Changing?
1. Landfill Tax Increase
The Landfill Tax is an environmental charge applied to waste disposed of at landfill sites, incentivising people to explore better waste management options.
Material Sent to Landfill | From 1 April 2024 | From 1 April 2025 |
---|---|---|
Standard Rate (per tonne) | £103.70 | £126.15 |
Lower Rate (per tonne) | £3.30 | £4.05 |
The increase in tax rates means it will become even more costly to send waste to landfills, especially mixed or biodegradable materials like food waste, cardboard, and plastics.
2. Simpler Recycling Legislation
From 31 March 2025, all UK businesses must standardise their recycling processes. Key changes include:
• Separate food waste bins for recycling, prohibiting food in general waste bins.
• Dry mixed recycling (paper, cardboard, plastics, and metals) must be collected together for efficient recycling.
• Non-recyclable materials should be placed in general waste bins.
These measures aim to simplify recycling while reducing the environmental impact of landfill waste.

What Does This Mean?
While these changes may initially lead to increased waste removal costs, they ultimately promote a more sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to waste management. By encouraging businesses to prioritise recycling and reduce landfill waste, these measures contribute to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future. By embracing these changes and implementing efficient waste management strategies, businesses and households can minimise the impact of increased costs and contribute to a healthier planet.
